My girlfriend loves fishing. If you ask me, it's actually kind of a strange hobby for a petite sized girl; but she loves it. So on one weekend, several month ago, I planned a fishing trip for us to celebrate a milestone in our relationship. And although I was the one who planned it, it did not turn out to be like any fishing trip that I imagined. In fact, I thought I was going to be bored out of my mind just sitting there, with the rest of the grandpas, waiting for Nemo to bite. Over, and over again, until I would complain about how boring it was and then we would get in a big fight before going home and ruining the trip......
Luckily, it did not go down like I imagined. Quite the contrary, by the end of the day, I did not get to read a single page of the two books that I brought with me, I was shirtless and covered in my sweat and fish slim, my muscles were aching from a entire day of intense workout, and I had one of the happiest days of my life.
The thing is.... these were not ordinary fish. These fish were MASSIVE. I completely underestimated the size of these freaking things. Some of the fish that we caught weighted more than my girlfriend. And because of our guide, who knew how to prepare the special bait, we kept on cashing the fish every couple of minutes, nonstop. And these fish did not go down without a fight. After they bit, it takes around 15-20 mins of tugging and wrestling the fishing pole before you rail one in. It was basically a contest to see who would tire quicker, you or the fish. At some points, the fish were clearly gaining the upper hand versus my girlfriend as she was getting pulled closer and closer to the edge of the lake. That was when I swooped in like the hero of the day and pulled her back to a safe area on the deck, but as soon as I would let go, the fish would slowly drag her away again....
Nevertheless, we prevailed as a team. Instead of losing my girlfriend to the fish, we had probably 10 catches throughout the day. We then took the obligatory pictures hugging the fish before setting them back into the lake. My shirt got ruined as the first fish decided to extract revenge by pooping on me as soon as I hugged it. So you know how little goldfish have these little poops, well then these massive fish had poop that was, well, massive... So the shirt went into the bin and I continued the day by sharing some quite intimate moment with massive slimy fishes. The below pictures documented our struggle
How To Do This:
The place we went to was a special fishing park called Bungsamran just 40 minutes outside of Bangkok. Because of the occasion, I booked a pickup and guide service through http://www.fishthailand.co.uk/. They picked us up at the hotel, provided a guide, and simple lunch. But you could totally do this yourself, simply get in a cab in Bangkok and ask to be driven to Bungsamran. There is no need to bring anything as you could rent every piece of equipment there. There are a couple of restaurants there too. Super fun day!
